Toulon offers an idyllic blend of city charm and seaside serenity, making it a perfect summer escape for a week-long break on the Var coast. From hidden beaches to island excursions and art-filled promenades, here are five curated experiences to enjoy Toulon and its exceptional surroundings in style.

Discover the City of Toulon

Our journey begins in Toulon, a city steeped in maritime history and Mediterranean flair. Known for its vast naval base—one of the most important in France—Toulon’s harbour is often graced by the imposing silhouette of warships and submarines, including the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which can frequently be spotted in August.

But beyond its military roots, Toulon is also famed for its fervent rugby culture. Consider catching a match or browsing the boutiques at the Stade Mayol and its adjacent shopping gallery. For lovers of architecture and the arts, Toulon’s city centre invites exploration: leafy squares and ornate fountains abound. Don’t miss Rue d’Alger, the vibrant Cours Lafayette market, the Rue des Arts and its contemporary galleries, Rue Prosper Ferrero and its charming kiosks, and the picturesque Place Puget—home to the exuberant Fountain of the Three Dolphins, shaded by lush vegetation and bordered by welcoming cafés.

Where to eat? We fell in love with Manofica, an elegant Italian restaurant facing the port—perfect for a sunset dinner.

A Beach Day at Les Sablettes

For a blissful day by the sea, head to the laid-back district of Les Sablettes, where Toulon’s coastline stretches into sandy coves and turquoise shallows. While Mar Vivo Beach offers a beautiful setting, its size makes it more suited for a quick dip than an afternoon of sunbathing. For families, the spacious and lifeguard-patrolled Plage des Sablettes is ideal.

How to get there? Hop aboard the scenic ferry from Toulon. The crossing takes around 20 minutes—an experience in itself.

Where to eat? Try La Toquade, a fantastic pizzeria just steps from Mar Vivo Beach.

Hike the Coastal Path

For nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts, the Var region is a paradise of trails and sea views. Whether you’re drawn to gentle seaside strolls or more demanding ascents, this is the perfect playground. One early morning, we set off along the Sentier du Littoral, beginning at Mar Vivo and winding toward the black sand beach of Plage de Fabrégas. The journey rewarded us with breathtaking vistas over the sea and several scenic lookouts. Absolutely stunning. And did you know the traditional boats of the South are affectionately called pointus?

Allow about three hours round trip to fully enjoy the views, take photos, and dip into the sea along the way. Don’t forget proper footwear and plenty of water. A heartfelt thank you to Nicole, who joined us for this unforgettable walk.

A Day Trip to Porquerolles

For a day of nature, cycling, and postcard-worthy beaches, escape to Porquerolles, the largest of the three Hyères Islands—and undoubtedly the most enchanting. The southern coast is dotted with rugged coves and cliffside views, while the north offers fine sandy beaches and crystalline waters. It’s here that you’ll find Plage Notre-Dame, crowned Europe’s most beautiful beach in 2015.

That said, the island can become crowded in peak season, and tranquil beach space may be hard to come by. We were also surprised by the presence of horseflies—not ideal. But for cycling lovers, Porquerolles is paradise. Don’t miss the Phare de Porquerolles (lighthouse), Sainte-Anne Church, the poetic Moulin du Bonheur, and the picturesque vineyards crisscrossing the island’s heart.

Getting there: Book tickets in advance through Les Bateliers de la Côte d’Azur. Boats depart from Toulon or Les Sablettes. The journey takes just over an hour. Return fare: €32 per adult.

Pro tip: Reserve your bikes ahead of time to avoid the crowds upon arrival. We highly recommend Le Team cycle shop—exceptional service. Rates from €16/day.

An Afternoon in Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer

Quieter and less rugged than Porquerolles, the peninsula of Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer offers a delightful mix of maritime tradition and coastal beauty. The harbor is still home to the classic pointus, nestled among gleaming pleasure boats. A stroll along the Sentier du Littoral rewards with sweeping views over the bay. Saint-Mandrier is connected to the Cap-Sicié massif by an isthmus, and hiking this ridge comes highly recommended for panoramic views and an invigorating escape into nature.

Where to eat? Head to Goût Thé 2 for a terrace dinner at sunset—a perfect close to the day. Thank you to Dominique for this wonderful recommendation.
