On a whim, we decided to escape for a weekend in Geneva, Switzerland. If you’re looking for a memorable mother-daughter getaway, this city should be at the top of your list. Geneva is wonderfully welcoming, and we were completely charmed by its relaxed elegance. The city offers an array of activities, scenic views, and culinary delights, which we’re excited to share with you in this curated guide.
Explore the Museum of Ethnography (MEG)
Our adventure began one sunny April afternoon with a visit to the Museum of Ethnography (MEG), a true gem located close to our hotel and open for Easter. This beautifully designed museum houses a vast collection of artifacts from across the globe, each with its own story and historical significance. Marvel at pieces like the Hawaiian feathered cape, a Mayan stela, handcrafted Aboriginal tools, and even a brick from the Great Wall of China. MEG is a perfect introduction to Geneva’s global heritage.
Practical Information: Open Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Stroll Through Geneva’s Old Town
Continue your journey into Geneva’s past by wandering through the cobbled streets of the Old Town. Here, you’ll discover a picturesque maze of alleys, historic buildings, and charming squares, including:
- The Town Hall and Baudet Tower
- Rue du Perron and its quaint 19th-century fountain
- Place de la Madeleine, with its relaxed atmosphere
- Passage des Degrés-de-Poules, a steep stairway dating to 1554
- Place Bourg-de-Four, once a bustling fairground, now home to a beautiful fountain
- Maison Tavel, Geneva’s oldest house and now a museum
- The Old Arsenal with its cannons and striking mosaics by Alexandre Cingria
- Saint Peter’s Cathedral, whose bells play a different melody each month
Climb to the Top of Saint Peter’s Cathedral
For a sweeping 360-degree view of Geneva, brave the 157 steps to the top of Saint Peter’s Cathedral. The climb is steep but rewards you with an unparalleled perspective over the city, lake, and mountains. Beneath the Cathedral lies an archeological site, where an audio guide reveals Geneva’s ancient history step by step. Don’t miss the lovely Chapel of the Maccabees, a Gothic gem from the 15th century, near the entrance.
Take a Walk Around Lake Geneva
After admiring the lake from above, take time to explore its shores. Start your walk at the Jardin Anglais (English Garden) and its iconic 4-meter-wide flower clock. Continue toward the harbor, where you’ll find Geneva’s famed Jet d’Eau, a 140-meter-high fountain and a hallmark of the city. Venture out on the pier for a closer look, then continue your lakeside stroll for stunning views of the Pâquis Lighthouse, an architectural landmark.
See Geneva’s Iconic Jet d’Eau
Visible from almost anywhere in the city, the Jet d’Eau is Geneva’s defining landmark and a must-see for any visitor. Towering 140 meters high, it lights up for special events, making it even more spectacular. Walk along the jetty to experience it up close, then head toward the Pâquis Lighthouse across the bay, an elegant symbol of Geneva’s nautical heritage.
Relax at the Bains des Pâquis
Facing the Jet d’Eau on the right bank lies the Bains des Pâquis, a beloved lakeside retreat with a natural swimming area. Take a moment to relax here with a view of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Be sure to admire the statue of Empress Sissi along the way, and if you’re hungry, the Bains des Pâquis offers excellent local cuisine in an unbeatable setting.
Walk the Promenade de la Treille
End your Geneva adventure at the Promenade de la Treille, Geneva’s oldest walkway, dating back to 1515. This chestnut-lined avenue boasts views over the Parc des Bastions and a unique charm. Take a seat on the world’s longest wooden bench (stretching an impressive 120 meters!) or explore the Parc des Bastions, home to Geneva’s Reformation Wall. For an elegant dinner, stop by the Kiosque des Bastions, a charming Belle Époque brasserie where history and sophistication meet.
Getting from Geneva Airport to the City Center
By bus: The number 5 bus leaves directly from the airport, taking about 30 minutes to reach the center. All buses stop at Gare Cornavin, Geneva’s central station.
Currency and Fees
Since Switzerland is not part of the European Union, some fees may apply to foreign transactions. Consider a travel-friendly bank card to avoid high fees, and check your mobile plan for roaming charges.
