It is in the countryside that one of the jewels of the cultural heritage of the Vendée is located: the Logis de la Chabotterie. At the beginning of June, “Les Rendez-vous au jardin” took place. It was on this occasion that I was able to discover it.
A little bit of history
This castle built in the 15th century, listed as a historical monument in 1958, is located in the Vendée countryside. In the town of Montreverd, about twenty minutes from La Roche-Sur-Yon and 40 minutes from Nantes. If you know the history of Vendée, you surely know that it was here that the arrest of François-Athanase Charette de la Contrie took place in 1796. The French soldier played an essential role in the War of Vendée while being at the head of the Catholic and Royal Army of Bas-Poitou and the Pays de Retz. It is therefore here that the Vendée war ended. And it is also about this famous war and this famous character that you can learn more in the museum thanks to videos and interactive tools.
Visit the Logis
Take time to visit the Logis. You will discover the art of living of the XVIIIth century by walking from room to room. Living room, office, huge kitchen, attic… each part of the house is furnished with antique furniture. You will be able to learn more about their origin and their date of manufacture thanks to the information displayed in each room. At the exit of the Logis, open your eyes wide. You will see a very charming garden. This is the place I liked the most during the visit. Bright colors that contrast with the stone of the building as a backdrop, wooden benches to enjoy the view, water lilies lining the park, and in the distance, an old cannon… Yes, this garden is beautiful.
